1968 Road Runner leaving car show

Introducing Ralph Paglia; Director of Digital Marketing and Advertising Solutions at ADP Dealer Services

What was your first car?

  • I bought my first car in 1973 when I was 16 years old from the head mechanic at Bob Johnson Chrysler Plymouth in Springville, NY. It was a 1968 Plymouth Road Runner that he had special ordered from the factory with equipment combinations not normally included. I paid $550 for that light yellow pillarless hardtop with black interior, 383 Magnum engine with Offenhauser intake and two 650CFM Carter AFB 4 barrel carbs, Hooker adjustable headers, special order Hemi Torqflite 727 auto tranny and a Surgrip 373:1 rear end. That Road Runner was so fast it was like driving an amusement park ride!

Any significant memories w/that car?

  • Oh my God yes! Too many for this space, but my first street race is a good one. One of the jocks in my high school had just received a brand new 1973 Chevy Camaro Z28 from his dad. I had my Road Runner for 3 days when he challenged me to a street race… Across the Rt. 219 bridge that connects Erie with Cattaraugus County NY over a 2,500 foot gorge (Zoar Valley). Too many cute girls around to say no, so I accepted his challenge and agreed to wager $300 I did not have. The race was set for midnight on Friday when we could close the highway from both ends, in true outlaw street racing fashion. I was so scared I was nauseous, but luckily my step-sister’s boyfriend had a beef with the Camaro owner and offered to cover the bet if I let him drive my Road Runner. I agreed and we met on the Cattaraugus side of the bridge at 11:30 PM. When he opened the hood of my Road Runner his eyes bulged and he asked “who did all this?” pointing to the 2x4 barrel carbs sitting on top the hirise Offy manifold and the Hooker headers. I said “that’s the way I bought it…”. Anyways, I watched from the finish line on the Erie County side as my yellow Road Runner kicked that Camaro’s ass by more than 5 car lengths in less than a quarter mile. We had set flares at both ends about a half mile from the bridge each way. Our motörhead friends were wearing road worker vests and had traffic stopped in both directions. As I ran to the Road Runner and jumped into the passenger side, we could hear the wail of police sirens, so my buddy kicked that Road Runner down activating the secondaries on those big Carters and I was smashed into the back of the seat by G forces as we rocketed up the grade from the bridge Northbound on Rt. 219 and soon rolling at over 120 MPH. After the night I was accepted by the Motorhead Clique, and hot ridding and street racing became a big part of my life all the way through 4 years of college and 2 years of Grad school. I had so many adventures in that Road Runner that if I could buy it back today I would surely pay stupid money for it. But, then there were the Dodge Super Bees, Plymouth Cuda Convertible and a brief fling with a genuine 426 Hemi Road Runner that followed and they all have great stories to go with their descriptions. Here’s a trivia question for muscle car collectors; what did Plymouth name the engines in those few 426 Hemi Road Runners built between 1968 and 1971? Right on top of that big Dual Quad aircleaner that sealed to the cold air intake hood was the bright metal circular insert that had cartoon characters and announced the big Hemi as the “Coyote Duster”.

What’s parked in your driveway now?

  • I have 3 cars in my garage at home in Gilbert, AZ. 1. A 2006 Chevy HHR mildly customized with lowered suspension, 18” Chromed Alloys and Pirelli P-Zero low profile wide tires, full tint and custom blue candy apple paint… I have it for my mother in law to drive! 2. 2008 Cadillac CTS with HO Direct Injection engine option, Xenon HID lights that turn with steering wheel, Navi system, killer tunes and every possible option except AWD (Arizona!) 3. 2002 Ford Expedition XLT 4x4 with optional big Triton V8 and all the goodies that made so many of us love big SUV’s… And I still love my Expedition! 92,000 miles on it and everything still works perfect, but it is actually better than new because it is paid off, as is the HHR!

Does your car reflect your personality?

  • The Cadillac is fast and aggressive when I am in the mood, and the Ford Expedition reminds me of me moving through a crowded airport getting my business done and anyone in our way better move… Now! So, yeah in some ways. But I miss the Impala SS I had which was blindingly fast and slippery through Phoenix traffic.

What was your first car?

  • First car was a 1988 Chevy Cavalier four-door. Had over 300k miles on it when it was given to me. I wouldn’t turn down a free car. I ended up giving it away when I bought my second car. Last I saw it was still rolling. Had the original engine and everything.

Mom On The Go…

Lexus RX 300 black vrImage via Wikipedia

Introducing Janice “Jai” Correa; Latina blogger, mom, music makeup and shoe addict, loves to shop and loves bargains!

What was your first car?

  • My first car was a 1987 Nissan Sentra. It was sky blue. I loved it! My parents got it to me as a sweet sixteen birthday gift.

Any significant memories w/that car?

  • Oh goodness. So it didn’t even last. I drove it all summer and fall. When the first big winter storm hit I lost control and hit a fire hydrant. I was ok thank goodness. But the car….tranny was done. I was upset about it for weeks!

What’s parked in your driveway now?

  • You’re going to laugh at me but a Nissan Sentra! lol. I’ve got a 2004 now. Not in love with it honestly. I think I got a lemon. Ready to get rid of it after the new year. I also have a tricked out Honda Civic that my hubby drives. It’s very fast and furious. :) My two year old loves it.

Does your car reflect your personality?

  • It definitely does not. My 2004 acts like a junker. I’ve never been so ready to get rid of a car. I’d like an SUV.

Favorite vehicle(s)?

  • I’d want an Explorer but hubby doesn’t like Fords. I also like Altimas. The body style is very nice.

Favorite vehicle…if money were no object?

  • My must have if money were no object would be the Lexus RX300. It’s just a very sleek car.

Vanity Plates?

  • No vanity plates.

Must have car gadget?

  • Bluetooth. Living in NY you can’t talk on the cell and drive without a bluetooth. I’m a mom on the go so I like to kill two birds with one stone. So I call my mom to catch up real quick or whoever while I’m driving.

Favorite driving tunes?

  • Any current hits on the radio. R&B, Spanish music. Whatever my mood strikes. What I do need besides that blue tooth is a itunes adapter for my car. The next car will have one.

Favorite Hollywood movie car?

  • hmmmm,Hollywood movie car? I would say Kit. Am I showing my age here? Give me a watch that I can use to talk to my car and I’d be all about it! My Sentra needs a stern talking to!

Introducing Susan Harris ; Quality USED CARS Below W/S; DUI IMMOBILIZATION Services; Private IMPOUNDS: Vol. Surrender/Bankruptcy, HOA/Code Enforcement, Abandoned, Junkcars, (813) 971-3733.

What was your first car?

  • Brand new 1972 Toyota Celica, one of the first in Tampa, FL

Any significant memories w/that car?

  • It was great on motorcycle trails and jumps

What’s parked in your driveway now?

  • Trucks in the driveway: 2008 Ford Crewcab 4X4, 2002 Dodge Crewcab and a 1995 GMC Yukon. Lots of “toys” in storage.

Does your car reflect your personality?

  • Possibly. Guess that’s why the trucks are in the driveway and the 72 Corvette Stingray is “in storage”.

Favorite vehicle(s)?

  • Have had lots of favorites, but I get over it quickly when I find the next one.

Favorite vehicle…if money were no object?

  • Would love to have that old Celica back.

HUGE ‘Sox Fan…

Tutto Italiano Boston 8Image by Steve Masiello via Flickr

Introducing Aaron Strout; CMO - Powered, Inc. (and dedicated husband/dad)

What was your first car?

  • Okay, I was hoping you wouldn’t ask this question. I could give you two answers. The first answer is, a ‘70 Oldsmobile Cutlass. And that is an honest answer because that was my parents’ car and it was the first car I actually drove. The second answer (and the real answer) is a Mercury Lynx. That car sucked. More on that in the next answer…

Any significant memories w/that car?

  • The Mercury Lynx was a piece of crap. I blew the head gasket within about 6 months. I also lost the starter after 3 months and spent a weekend parking on hills (it was a standard) so that I could roll/clutch start the car. Did I mention that it was ugly?

What’s parked in your driveway now?

  • Lexus 350 RX. LOVE IT!!!

Does your car reflect your personality?

  • Sort of. Or let’s say, it used to. I used to live just outside of Boston, MA and was more of a suburbanite. I now live in Austin, TX and like to think I’m a little hipper (soul patch, side burns, jeans to work). So while I still love my Lexus, it’s starting to feel a little uppity to me.

Favorite vehicle(s)?

  • BMWs (almost any kind), Audi’s, Mustangs, the new Charger and new Camaro. Contrary to my last answer, the 2010 Lexus IS Convertible is very sweet. Dream cars are Porches, Lotus or Lamborghinis…

Favorite vehicle…if money were no object?

  • Oops… just answered that in my last question (last three cars).

Vanity Plates?

  • Nope. If I did, it would be something geeky or something related to the Redsox. I’m a HUGE ‘Sox fan.

Must have car gadget?

  • GPS - is this a gadget? I used to think that I didn’t need this. I was wrong.

Favorite driving tunes?

  • Tool, AC/DC, Pearl Jam, Papa Roach, Rage Against the Machine.

Favorite Hollywood movie car?

  • Hard to pick - I’m thinking that the cars in the last 3-4 James Bond movies would do the trick…

Bottom of the Planet…

UK VW Camper (T3) with Leisuredrive Crusader C...Image via Wikipedia

Introducing Mike Johansson; Social Media strategist, college lecturer in PR and Writing and consultant. Dad, Kiwi and sailor.

What was your first car?

  • 1962 Peugeot 403 that I bought when it was nearly 20 years old!

Any significant memories w/that car?

  • First time getting a car stuck in sand. First time taking a girl on a camping trip, First time … well you get the idea. Also, I could drop the clutch and leave anybody at a light for at least the first 50-100 yards!

What’s parked in your driveway now?

  • 2006 Ford Escape that really wishes it were a hybrid … maybe next time. My wife calls it my “big car.” I call it my mini-SUV. Either way there’s a good amount of room for my “too-tall-for-economy-class” frame.

Does your car reflect your personality?

  • It’s practical.

Favorite vehicle(s)?

  • The 1968 VW CamperVan I owned 1981-1983 (rear-mounted engine meant no getting stuck in the sand on surfing and camping trips). The 1977 Fiat I owned in 1985 and put nearly 15,000 miles on during four months of travel in Europe and Britain. The 1962 Peugeot. Hey it was “Colombo’s” car and those memories …

Favorite vehicle…if money were no object?

  • The all-new VW camping wagon. Once a VW van owner, always a VW van owner at heart!

Vanity Plates?

  • No. But if I had them it would say: “UPSIDDWN” I’m from New Zealand and so now I’m on the “bottom” of the planet! :-)

Must have car gadget?

  • GPS - perfect for after those random, “I just want to drive somewhere with no idea where I’m going” moments, so I can find my way home again!

Favorite driving tunes?

  • Linkin Park, Dropkick Murphys, Flogging Molly, Leonard Cohen and sometimes the iPod on “Random”

Favorite Hollywood movie car?

  • Got to be “Little Miss Sunshine’s” VW van … are we seeing a trend yet?

Introducing Marianne Johnson; Direct Marketing Consultant, CRM, digital, DM, Social Media. Specialization in database, loyalty, lifecycle marketing. Auto, banking, CPG, energy.

What was your first car?

  • It was a new Ford, can’t remember the make. It was an A-plan. Dad was a fuel systems engineer on the F-150. It was new, it was reliable, it was the first of many. Maybe there’s a new generation out there who’ll be able to say that one day.

Any significant memories w/that car?

  • Not that I’m about to share!

What’s parked in your driveway now?

  • Ah, Audi A3 Turbo Sport.Fast! My favorite feature, blue tooth that reads my phone book right above my odometer. Oh, and the red and black interior lighting. Yes, and it has the paddles too, not that I use the paddles.

Does your car reflect your personality?

  • Yes, fancy pants.

Favorite vehicle(s)?

  • Ford Flex, VW Vanagon, Audi TT, F-150

Favorite vehicle…if money were no object?

  • Bentley Coupe Flying Spur

Vanity Plates?

  • Sushi Me

Must have car gadget?

  • Bluetooth for sure. If car makers promoted the safety factor more to women, they’d sell more just on that feature alone. Our hands are always busy.

Lights Me Up…

Cars Road Trip - Lightning McQueenImage by kurros via Flickr

Introducing Meryl K. Evans; Content maven aka writer, editor and bookwormette who plays games (www.thegamezen.com), PTA mom and tennis when not refereeing the kids.

What was your first car?

  • Chocolate brown Ford Mustang GLX. Great car, ugly color. Great car to start with because it was small and easy to control. My dad bought the car with me in mind (I don’t know why the brown color) and by the time I got my driver’s license, it was time for a new car and he passed the ‘stang to me.

Any significant memories w/that car?

  • I hated giving up the car only two years later. My dad “Mr. Lucky Al” won a brand new Cavalier. It was bare-bones, but I had to consider the Mustang was five years old and I’d be going off to college and on my own soon. I figure a newer car was smarter even though it was plain and had fewer features.

What’s parked in your driveway now?

  • Blue Mazda CX-9, the crossover. Why do car companies use letter/number model names? They’re not memorable like Cougar, Prius, Expedition, etc.

Does your car reflect your personality?

  • Comfortable, convservative, family-oriented, good worker and sometimes fun (see car gadget question).

Favorite vehicle(s)?

  • Mustang, Expedition

Favorite vehicle…if money were no object?

  • I honestly have no idea as I don’t think about that. I’d want a car with the MP3 connector, a radio that shows song title and artist along with some other features. Function is important.

Vanity Plates?

  • Meryl. My first car had “MerylK” since Kay is my middle initial and my maiden name also started with K. My dad gave us all vanity plates, then they got too expensive. When we were planning to get the Mazda, we looked up the cost of vanity plates for the heck of it and the price dropped. I figure my name will keep me honest on the road.

Must have car gadget?

  • I love my MP3 player plugin. I have a cable that’s always in there and all I have to do is attach my MP3 to it. It’s made a big difference to my drives because I am deaf and the radio was frustrating (the car doesn’t show the song title or artist as I had hoped).

Favorite driving tunes?

  • Billy Joel “We Didn’t Start the Fire” — always lights me up. Songs from Stephen Sondheim’s “Company” and songs I know the lyrics by heart (because of my deafness… I can follow a song when I know the lyrics). Not like I can read the lyrics while driving!

Favorite Hollywood movie car?

  • Lightning McQueen of Cars. Hey, he’s cute, red and fun. My husband loves the ‘61 Corvette in Animal House.

The Cadillac of Minivans…

1954 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing CoupeImage via Wikipedia

Introducing Mary S. Butler; Website strategist, Razorfish, NYC; online media professional with more than a decade of experience; personal finance, consumer product and digital automotive.

What was your first car?

  • 1969 Chevy Impala SS; a dangerously fast — but fun! — car for a 16-year-old girl on the southwest side of Chicago.

Any significant memories w/that car?

  • My last memory is a sad one. My brother was drag racing ol’ Betsy down 95th St. when the engine caught on fire. Before she was towed to the junk yard, we removed the SS badging, which my brother still has.

What’s parked in your driveway now?

  • I now live on the Lower East Side of Manhattan and — for the first time since getting my driver’s license — am carless. Prior to working at Razorfish, I used to test drive a different car every week and drove hundreds of different makes and models over a nine-year period.

Does your car reflect your personality?

  • I hope not; my primary ride these days is big, slow, noisy and has MTA badging :)

Favorite vehicle(s)?

  • All-time favorite: 1954 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Favorite production tuner: Panoz Esperante JRD Favorite production vehicle: 2009 Bentley Continental GTC Speed Favorite concept: Rinspeed iChange.

Favorite vehicle…if money were no object?

  • All of the above .

Vanity Plates?

  • I never had vanity plates, but was always jealous of the Chicago-area driver who thought to register “NONE” first. Allegedly, he never received any parking tickets.

Must have car gadget?

  • I never drive without my iPhone. The GPS obviates the need for a PND and there are dozens of great automotive-related apps already available. However, I am still waiting for a version of Wikitude for the iPhone (it is currently available for Android phones only).

Favorite driving tunes?

  • Whenever I drive around a neighborhood or go on a road trip, I try to play whatever I have by bands from that area. I play Pegboy in Chicago’s Beverly neighborhood and Wilco when I’m driving through Irving Park. In New York, I like to listen to Public Enemy (Long Island), KRS-One (Bronx), Ramones (Queens), King Missile (East Village) and countless other NYC bands. I only had a week in Paris with a car, but spent the whole time listing to St. Germain as well as the Hotel Costes compilations and everything else that Stéphane Pompougnac has worked on.

Favorite Hollywood movie car?

  • There are too many to limit it to one (everything driven in the James Bond films, the Lexus concept in Minority Report, all of the Fast & the Furious cars, the 1968 Mustang GT 390 from Bullitt, etc.). And while I am not a huge minivan fan, I love the scene in Get Shorty when John Travolta demonstrates to Danny DeVito the power sliding door on his rented Oldsmobile Silhouette and pronounces it “the Cadillac of minivans.” It isn’t long before DeVito, who plays a famous actor, has to have one of his own.
