Lights Me Up…

Cars Road Trip - Lightning McQueenImage by kurros via Flickr

Introducing Meryl K. Evans; Content maven aka writer, editor and bookwormette who plays games (www.thegamezen.com), PTA mom and tennis when not refereeing the kids.

What was your first car?

  • Chocolate brown Ford Mustang GLX. Great car, ugly color. Great car to start with because it was small and easy to control. My dad bought the car with me in mind (I don’t know why the brown color) and by the time I got my driver’s license, it was time for a new car and he passed the ‘stang to me.

Any significant memories w/that car?

  • I hated giving up the car only two years later. My dad “Mr. Lucky Al” won a brand new Cavalier. It was bare-bones, but I had to consider the Mustang was five years old and I’d be going off to college and on my own soon. I figure a newer car was smarter even though it was plain and had fewer features.

What’s parked in your driveway now?

  • Blue Mazda CX-9, the crossover. Why do car companies use letter/number model names? They’re not memorable like Cougar, Prius, Expedition, etc.

Does your car reflect your personality?

  • Comfortable, convservative, family-oriented, good worker and sometimes fun (see car gadget question).

Favorite vehicle(s)?

  • Mustang, Expedition

Favorite vehicle…if money were no object?

  • I honestly have no idea as I don’t think about that. I’d want a car with the MP3 connector, a radio that shows song title and artist along with some other features. Function is important.

Vanity Plates?

  • Meryl. My first car had “MerylK” since Kay is my middle initial and my maiden name also started with K. My dad gave us all vanity plates, then they got too expensive. When we were planning to get the Mazda, we looked up the cost of vanity plates for the heck of it and the price dropped. I figure my name will keep me honest on the road.

Must have car gadget?

  • I love my MP3 player plugin. I have a cable that’s always in there and all I have to do is attach my MP3 to it. It’s made a big difference to my drives because I am deaf and the radio was frustrating (the car doesn’t show the song title or artist as I had hoped).

Favorite driving tunes?

  • Billy Joel “We Didn’t Start the Fire” — always lights me up. Songs from Stephen Sondheim’s “Company” and songs I know the lyrics by heart (because of my deafness… I can follow a song when I know the lyrics). Not like I can read the lyrics while driving!

Favorite Hollywood movie car?

  • Lightning McQueen of Cars. Hey, he’s cute, red and fun. My husband loves the ‘61 Corvette in Animal House.
