Huge Ass Subwoofers…

Introducing Christine Cavalier; Writer/techie/academic/mac/mom. Fun links. Controversy. Deep thoughts. GO!

What was your first car?

  • A red 1978 Ford Fairmount Station Wagon with 3 on the floor.  Yes, three.  It was a monster and my mother’s old car.  She let me drive it when she got a better one. I learned how to drive on that sputtering manual drive barge.  It was trial by fire. Sometimes literally.  Read on.

Any significant memories w/that car?

  • It stalled constantly, so I got good at keeping my toes on the brake, revving with my heel, and left foot letting out the clutch with precision.  I lived in the mountains, so you can imagine how good I got at this, seeing how many times I’d be stopped at lights on 20-30 degree slopes. Besides stalling at idle, it almost went up in flames once.  Driving home after a late game in high school, the steering column caught fire and toxic smoke (plastic burning) filled the car.  I parked it right in the middle of the road.  I hopped out, choking.  Before running from imminent explosion, I went in the back seat to get my new pom-pons that I had just spent 20 bucks on.  The car could’ve blown up, but my god, I was gonna get those pom-pons.

What’s parked in your driveway now?

  • A Mazda Protege and a Honda Odyssey.  Neither one is purple but I’m working on that.

Does your car reflect your personality?

  • If so, how? The Mazda was my first new car.  I bought it in 1999 so I could get to a new job outside of Philly.  It was the best car I could afford.  I would have bought something way more cool if I had the money, of course. The Odyssey is a 2006 (after the remodel) and it reflects my position in life as a Stay-at-Home-Mom of 2 young kids.  The hit to my coolness mojo was major and I’m still recovering. That being said, my Odyssey is the tricked out version of the model, so it turns out to be a luxury vehicle and the nicest car I’ve ever owned.

Favorite vehicle(s)?

  • I used to be a big fan of the candy-apple red Ford Mustang GT Convertible, but I really should shop around for a ‘dream car’ upgrade…  I like speed/power.  Did I mention that my minivan kicks ass?  I was doing 90 the other day and I had no idea.  Felt like 50.  I’m serious.  But yeah…  a new dream car is definitely in order.  I’m a sucker for convertibles, so that’s a must.

Favorite vehicle if money were no object:

  • I’d buy my husband a Mercedes S-Class.  Again, I need to rethink my Mustang obsession.  Get back to me in a few weeks.

Vanity Plates? If so - what’s on them?

  • Don’t have them, but if I did, it would say “PurpleCar” and the car would be … Purple!

Must have car gadget?

  • I love gadgets and tech.  Right now I’d like the iPod dock for the Odyssey.  There’s a hidden place for it in the glove compartment but it isn’t standard.  Costs more than $300.  Also, I’d love some HUGE ass SUBWOOFERS. Gimme a beat!  (Again, I’m quite serious)

Favorite driving tunes?

  • All over the map, but mostly hip hop, pop, alternative rock, rock and some reggaeton now and then.

Favorite Hollywood movie car?

  • Any convertible James Bond drives (well, not the latest movie … I hear the cars are lame in this new one coming out).
