Slushbox Autobahn Cruiser…

Steve McQueen in Bullitt.Image via Wikipedia

  • What was your first car?

1986 Saab 900

  • Any significant memories w/that car?

It was slow enough that I couldn’t get into any trouble, but unique enough that I felt cool driving it.

  • What’s parked in your driveway now?

Two Mercedes: ML 350 and C300 sedan. One of my best friends somehow convinced me to leave BMWs after nearly 10 years of ownership for the new C-Class. I couldn’t do the full transition to slushbox autobahn cruiser though as the car is a 6-speed manual.

  • Does your car reflect your personality?

Not really - my commute is sometimes upwards of 3 hours per day, so I needed to get something that was very comfortable at 5 mph. If I had a shorter commute I would probably be driving a modified BMW 135 coupe.

  • Favorite vehicle(s)?

Most of them are Porsches: Carrera RS, Carrera GT, 904GTS

  • Favorite vehicle…if money were no object?

See above

  • Vanity Plates?

My old BMW 540 had the BMW CCA plate: BMW 540. It was just a coincidence that the number 540 was available when I applied for it. If I had to get one for my new car it would likely read: Nobody.

  • Must have car gadget?

Manual transmission

  • Favorite driving tunes?

Until recently I rarely played music while driving. Now that I sit in traffic for many hours, I mostly listen to Channel 24 on Sirius.

  • Favorite Hollywood movie car?

While most members of my generation would pick Paul Walker’s Supra or Ronin’s S8, my personal favorite(s) are a tie between Steve McQueen’s Porsche in Le Mans and his Mustang in Bullitt. I’m such a fanboy I wear the Tag Heuer Monaco. Yes, I’m a walking cliche.
