I Was A Bad Driver…

Ferrari 430 Scuderia at NAIAS 08Image via Wikipedia

Introducing Alex Schoeneberger; I’m from Texas and I now live in the Soviet Republic of California. I love cars and Dallas Stars hockey.

What was your first car?

  • 1994 Jeep Cherokee

Any significant memories w/that car?

  • My Jeep was a stick, power nothing, not even 4WD, the big feature it came with was only an AM/FM radio and terrible factory speakers. After it got broken into to steal the CD playing head unit I put in (yet somehow the thief missed 200 CDs under the seats), my dad and I installed a new head unit and cut out a small square of the dash for a red blinking LED to poke out of. The LED was wired to the same wire that kept the head unit’s clock accurate when the vehicle was turned off, so it turned off when the vehicle turned on and turned on when the vehicle turned off, giving the illusion of an alarm. It worked, too… no more break-ins happened. The vehicle was pretty much indestructable unless I hit another vehicle, which I did a few times… I was a bad driver in my youth.

What’s parked in your driveway now?

  • 2000 Toyota Camry LE. Reliable, roomy, and snore-inducing, this vehicle has 120k on it and will probably last to 300k, but I don’t think I can stand to keep it that long.

Does your car reflect your personality?

  • I’m reliable. That’s about the only thing that matches up.

Favorite vehicle(s)?

  • 2009 Mazda MX-5 - insert jokes about fabulous hairdressers here, but this car is the embodiment of a British roadster without the maintenance issues. It also, with minimal modifications, outperforms vehicles that cost twice as much on the track

Favorite vehicle…if money were no object?

  • Several, in order of preference: 1. Ferrari F430 Spider 2. 1969 Datsun 240z 3. 1967 Ford Mustang GT500KR 4. 1995 Mazda RX-7 5. 1971 Corvette Stingray

Vanity Plates?

  • When I lived in Arizona, I had NTVTEXN. Not wanting to give the Soviet Republic of California any more money than they’re already going to be taking from me, I don’t have vanity plates here.

Must have car gadget?

  • 4 wheels and a way to make them go.

Favorite driving tunes?

  • Alt rock, classic rock, punk, some indie.

Favorite Hollywood movie car?

  • Toss up between the General Lee and Eleanor.
